(1801-1872), a Belgian Jesuit, was a professor in the University of St. Louis from 1828 to 1838. From 1838 he was a missionary among the Pottawatomies; from 1840 on, a missionary of remarkable zeal and success among the Flatheads and other tribes of the Northwest. In the first fifteen years of his mission he estimated that he had traveled 120,000 miles. His influence over the Indian tribes was immense.
