A clear, colorless liquid rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and distributed throughout the body. It has bactericidal activity and is used often as a topical disinfectant. It is widely used as a solvent and preservative in pharmaceutical preparations as well as serving as the primary ingredient in ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES.

NCH3-CH2-OH. A colorless mobile liquid, almost odorless and having a burning taste. It is inflammable, burning with a blue flame. Specific gravity, 0.789 at 20C. Boiling point, 78.3C; melting point, 112C. It has a strong affinity for water; when mixed with equal parts of it, there is an evolution of heat and a contraction of volume. It is one of the most valuable organic solvents and the mother substance of many important pharmaceutical preparations. For certain industrial purposes it is denatured.
