The leaves and berries, Laurus (Ph. L.) have a sweet, fragrant smell, and an aromatic, astringent taste. Sweet bay has been advised as a stomachic and carminative, but is now rarely used. It is, sometimes, employed as a fomentation and in glysters; and the berries are an ingredient in the Emplastrum Cumini.
