(1791-1871), of Massachusetts, was admitted to the bar in 1813. From 1815 to 1819 he was in Europe engaged in philological study and collecting a library which was unsurpassed in Spanish literature. He was professor of modern languages and literature at Harvard from 1819 to 1835. He wrote a "History of Spanish Literature," which is recognized as a masterly work. His letters have been published.
