A French essayist and miscellaneous prose-writer; born in Paris, Aug. 4, 1604; died at Nemours, July 20, 1676. "The Practical Side of the Theatre" is his best-known work,-an attempt to handle the theory and technique of the drama after the theory of Scaliger. It is in harmony with the Corneille school.
