A term, proposed by Professor Owen, to express the changes of form, which one animal species undergoes in a series of successively produced individuals, extending from the one developed from the ovum to that which becomes the imago or last perfected individual. This term he employs in contradistinction to metamorphosis, which he restricts to the changes of form undergone by one and the same individual. See Generation, alternate.
