(1824-1886), entered the U. S. navy in 1841. He served during the Mexican War. He was made a lieutenant of the " Louisiana " in the Confederate service in 1862. In 1863 he took command of the " Shenandoah," with which he preyed upon the U. S. merchant marine, and made thirty-eight captures. He did not learn of the fall of the Confederacy until three months after its occurrence.
